It hadn’t been noticeable to the other Covers, but within Ariana had grown a desperate unhappiness. Many good things had happened, and everything was just about perfect except for one thing. She had hoped that like Miss Josalyn, Banquo, Mister Natrium, and Vienna, that he would come back. She’d hoped that he would come back and laugh, and tell her how he’d been so clever and pulled the greatest prank of all on her. But he hadn’t. Her lower jaw trembled. She wanted to be able to play once more with him, to be roughed about more than she would with Vienna, but not genuinely mocked like she would with her older brother. The longing was a deep one that had taken root within her chest, plucking at her every time she had been away from the other joyous Covers. Was it possible… was it possible that he really had betrayed all of them, including her?

So today, with the longing and a growing curiosity, the Yahn girl had glanced behind her before jogging to the Silver Cove borders. She didn’t often leave the Cove, and she’s never been past the Delta or Aldea Fantasma. Were there… monsters out there? A shiver went through the girl’s spine as she looked up to the overcast sky. No, such things weren’t real. She was almost grown now and there was no reason to be thinking such foolish things. Blue-purple eyes passed over her now lean, lengthened legs, and then down to her ebony tipped tail. A shy, slight confidence crept into the young woman’s chest as a breath was drawn in. She’d make it to wherever quick enough that she’d be back before her folks started worrying, after all, those many days spent jogging and sprinting hadn’t been for nothing. The breath was exhaled, and then limbs set her into motion towards the Bosque de la Ceniza. She was going to find Mortus Sero, and though she wasn’t planning on it, maybe she’d see him.

A few dry coughs were let out as the girl slowed her pace when the sound of a river reached her ears. She hadn’t been running the whole time, but enough that it had made her previously dry throat a little worse. Russet muzzle lifted to the sky, eyes daring to stray near the still visible sun. That was good. Snout fell back down, and Ariana padded the last bit of distance between her and the edge of the river. A sigh fled lungs as she put her jaws to the flowing water. Why was she doing this? He was a Seron, wasn’t he? Maybe he’d kill her if she did find him. A part of her trembled in sheer terror at the thought of the boy’s whole personality, his whole life in the Cove as being fake. Lips twisted in a frown, and teeth clenched as ears pinned back. The Yahn daughter swallowed once, and went back to her drink. Maybe she was doing this in hopes of convincing herself otherwise.

The young wolf trotted across the terrain with an appearance of laze, his tail swinging as his skull lowered. It was clear that he was relaxed, calmed in this atmosphere, if only on the outside. Still the youth thought of his betrayal to Silver Cove, of Adele shunning him from her world. He sighed softly, his pace slowing as he thought of that tragic day. She had told him not to go back, and he knew he would not, no matter how much it pained him. He was no longer welcome there, no longer allowed to pretend he had two families. At times, he felt like he had none, for the Tevirye clan was a polar opposite to the warm-hearted Vedis. He could never tell them of his worries, not even dear Circe. Even she, his beloved sister, would laugh in his face.

Again he sighed, but with a vigorous shake of his skull, the cinnamon child was again on the prowl, shoving away every thought of the Cove wolves. He would make new memories here, better memories. His muscat body padded alongside the river, slowing to pick more carefully along the rocky terrain. His tail swung at times to keep his balance, and the boy moved with his nose very nearly touching the ground, his eyes cast downwards. Xavier halted for a moment to turn his stare to the rushing waters, a breath huffing from his nostrils, and with a sudden intake of air, the lad was off again, striking up an empowered lope.

He appeared almost reckless as he went, leaping across the earth in great, bounding strides, his muscles bunching and coiling with each movement. Xavier was much like a runaway train, fleeing his dark pat in the only way he knew how, for his thoughts would not leave him be. Today, however, was to be a day that doomed him to delving into old memories. It was when he saw another wolf that the boy slid to a reckless halt, rocks flying everywhere as his feet dug into the ground, limbs locked. The wolf was colored similarly to him, though more penetrated with red, and was smaller, a young female. As soon as his steely gaze landed upon her face, Xavier froze in recognition, every muscle in his body going still and rigid. "Ariana...?" he ventured hesitantly, in shock at her presence. "What are you doing here?"

Each lap soothed the girl’s throat, banner swinging loosely between her legs. The dread that she was wrong about him hung in her belly, alone aside the water that trickled in with each lick. She didn’t feel hurt or betrayed by the fact that all of those things were possible, like so many had been. She just wanted all of them to be wrong! They had played together and joked and laughed. How would someone be able to fake that? Another pause in her now pointless lapping was made for a heavy sigh to be allowed to pass, and then skull hung so that the tip of her nose touched to the jagged surface of the water. All this thinking and mental persuading was all in vain.

It wasn’t but a second later that a jarring noise brought her skull up in a flash, a surprised yelp bursting from her jaws. Wide eyes were immediately set upon the familiar frame, though rather than comfort, only more fear was spawned from the pools of steel blue. The Cover half leaped half fell in a vaguely “away” direction, her body then met with the again surprising chill of the water with a splash as she was submerged. Quickly, she pushed her head above once again, feet gaining balance on the mud and stones below. With a cough to expel the water, the distraught expression remained on features as she stared at him. Was it really him?

"X-Xavier," all emotion was absent in her voice aside the echoing fear that made it tremble as her legs did. It was him. Would he kill her? What would he do? Her jaws continued to tremble as a step was taken back, "I-I was just getting a drink, yeah? How ‘b-bout you?" Another step was taken back while thoughts flashed through her head. This was the wolf that had protected her from ghosts in the graveyard? Now, he was bigger though. More mature, and probably even more like a bloodthirsty Seron. She shuffled backwards in the water a few more paces, towards the other side of the river. Better safe than sorry, r-right?

"Speech."

He had scared her, and at once felt guilty as she lurched away from him like a recoil, her body tripping until she splashed with great noise into the river. His ears twisted back at the sound, nose peering cautiously over the bank until he saw her bob back to the surface, unharmed. A soft sigh drifted from the boy's lips, a single ear pivoted towards her as she spoke, though his face seemed shamed. His brows furrowed, his lips parted as though to speak, but he was at a loss for words. Xavier took a step forward, frowning when Ariana stumbled in the opposite direction, towards the other side of the river.

"Ariana, I'm not going to hurt you," he told her with a sigh, his voice full of doubts and sorrow. He seemed melancholy, his tired eyes harboring a great sadness as he watched his friend try her best to stay away from him. It was like he had become the plague, loathed by all for abandoning his unreal family. He had only been loyal! He had only been loyal... Again he sighed, dropping his haunches to the earth in defeat, his shoulders hunched and headset lowered.

She was more lithe, having filled out and grown larger than the last time he had seen her, though Ariana would never be a massive wolf. She was more matured, but clearly wary of him, of what he might do now that he was a traitor. "I didn't... I just- I'm sorry, okay?" he finally huffed, stumbling over his words like he never had before. Adele had not accepted his apologies, and he didn't expect Ariana to either. Now matter how kind they seemed, the Cove wolves were apparently not open to forgiveness. Ariana was just going to end up another childhood love he would never see again, Xavier was sure of it.

The words that came from his mouth shocked the Yahn daughter. She had been expecting something crueler, something a villainous Seron like the ones from her childhood imagination would say. The feeling flashed across her façade for a moment before it was washed away with a chuckle. She tried to make it sound legitimate, but it still ended up coming out nervous. "Haha! I know that you n-ninny. We’re friends, r-right? You ‘jus surprised me, yeah," a grin quivered across her features. A second after she’d spoken, Ariana was quite proud of herself on the inside. That question in the middle would be a sure way to confirm things. Brows were lifted in a hopeful fashion, though wobbling legs continued to belie the smile.

The corners of lips sank down as his voice reached her ears once more. The female’s folded, black dabbed ears lifted, a soft frown was spread across her muzzle. "Well, if ya are… i-if ya really are, then apology accepted. By me at least," a bashful smile was unable to be held back as she lowered her head in attempt to hide it, ears leaning back. What could she say? It made her happy to hear the words, too happy to carry on with the caution that she had before.

The quivers gradually drained from the flame-hued girl as she made her way through the water. She emerged some distance from Xavier, turning to face him for a moment. Body was given a shake to flick water away, furs sticking up to create an illusion of fluff when she stopped. "So, uh, how’s everything goin’ for ya?" a pause was made as placid purple gaze drifted to the side, a paw lifted in mid-step, "You wanna take a walk?"

"Speech."

Xavier watched Ariana with that sad look, his eyes hinting at some sort of hope, though the low headset he wore and the backward twist of his ears indicated that he was unsure of the situation. The boy's brows furrowed at her nervous chuckle and attempt at light-hearted words, the young woman's quaking legs and shaky voice betraying her feign of confidence. He nodded slowly, a shrug of his shoulders offered to the lass, without whose company he very well might have grown depressed. It encouraged him to hear her say that they were friends, or supposed to be anyways, and a slight amount of courage tumbled within the pit of his stomach. "Right," he encourage softly, uplifting one ear to pivot it towards the elegant dame who had yet to stop her quivering.

The russet prince presented an equal frown as one sprawled across Ariana's delicate lips, her jowls twisting down in a manner that seemed to sadden Xavier, who dropped his muzzle further. As she spoke again, however, the girl's expression changed drastically, her words causing both of the lad's ears to perk upwards, his snout arching itself into the air as his eyes brightened. "You're the only one," he told her with a soft huff, though it was impossible to miss the pleasure that had spread across his face. "But that's better than nothing, right?" Xavier gave the girl a hopeful smile, the expression genuine and causing a faint twinkle in his eyes, the eyes that had an underlying haunted air to them, masked by the happiness he forced himself to portray.

Ariana came closer then, diminishing the distance she had created as she clambered up the bank and onto solid land, still leaving a considerable gap between the pair. He shrugged at her question, his withers shifting as did the youth's feet somewhat awkwardly in the gravel. "Alright, I suppose..." Xavier's lips pursed, his cautious stare returning to Ariana from where it had previously been watching the water flowing. "I passed the youth trials," he said, realizing at the last second that Ariana probably didn't know what that was, given that the Seron wolves were the only ones he knew of who forced their youth to prove themselves before they could be official members of the pack. As she offered to take a walk, he nodded, humming a soft, "Okay," as he padded slowly towards her, allowing the girl a safe distance between them as he purposefully set the path for the direction opposite of Mortus Sero, his snout dropped as was classic of his posture.

Shy ears lifted as Xavier replied, his own features lighting a bit more. "’Course," gentle, airy tones uttered the single word. Ariana would have added more, like something about how the opinions of others didn’t really matter, but she couldn’t say that. It would be much too hypocritical of her to tell him not to worry about what other wolves thought. It made happiness glow inside her like the warm flames that sprouted from an inviting fireplace to see him smiling. And they were still friends. That made her even more contented. She felt wrong to have ever thought that he was any less the friend he’d been to her when they’d played long ago in the graveyard.

Bluish eyes watched him now without fear, a smile still gracing lips as the she-wolf padded forward. Her tail swayed merrily to display her ease, and she listened intently to his response to her questions. "That’s great to hear!" Admittedly, she had barely a clue as to what the “Youth Trials” were, but she would reply with approval nonetheless. Her thoughts wandered to her own life for a moment. It was pretty boring and calm, but that was okay for her. She hadn’t seen her family around much though… But she was going to turn one soon, and then she’d be able to be the Cove’s runner! That would be exciting! Her heart fluttered at the idea before the Yahn girl looked back to Xavier.

A leisurely pace was taken on as she walked besides him. Snout shifted this way and that, casting stare admiringly at the various greenery. "I, uh, I’m gonna be a year old soon, and then Miss Josalyn might let me be the Cove’s runner!" the female said, tail giving an energetic wag as she voiced her thoughts. "I want to see all of Baja Country someday," she stated, a proud huff escaping lungs while muzzle pointed ahead. Turning to look at the cream boy, a faint smirk played across lips, the mischief odd on the typically laid-back child’s features. "I still aven’t payed you back though, for that time in the graveyard, yeah?" With that, she took a breath and hurtled herself to the side at Xavier to try and knock him into the river, packing as much force as she could. Upon her landing, she stumbled heavily to keep herself from tumbling in as well, and then gathered back her balance before bouncing off further away with a light laugh. "Let’s see if I’m ready ta be a runner, Xav!"

A soft huff rolled carefully from the boy's lips as Ariana fell into line with his meandering pace, the male's toes spreading over the rocky ground that fussed at his paws. Used to the rough terrain by now, Xavier was unfazed by the minor irritation and continued to pad along the riverbank, casting a sidelong glance at Ariana every now and then. He nodded as she commented happily on his passing, but the boy did not seem to find any necessity in explaining the Trials further to her. She would likely think it a gruesome way to initiate young wolves into a pack, and the last thing he wanted was to cause her to think any worse of the Serons than she already did.

The faint simper that sprawled over the bloke's lips as Ariana told him about possibly being the Cove's runner was melancholy, a glazed look masking his eyes as he twisted his muzzle towards her to observe the russet girl, his shoulders shrugging lately. "How is Josalyn?" he asked, his voice curious but tinged with caution, as though he were afraid to broach an unwelcome subject. He could only imagine the sore topic of interest whenever his name was mentioned in the Cove. A nod dipped the male's skull at her ambitions, his own desires not quite so roving. In fact, there was little else that interested Xavier more right now than Ariana's lean frame, which had become the body of a woman.

An ear twisted back at the slightly teasing tone that the girl took on, a wary eye swiveling in her direction just in time to see the girl launch herself for his muscular frame, taking the man by surprise, his own limbs churning beneath his anatomy as the lad's bulk was thrown towards the river, his claws scrabbling at the bank. Tumbling down it, Xavier landed just on the edge of the river, which swelled around his limbs as he launched himself powerfully back up the embankment, grappling at the edge before he pulled himself back up to solid land, a soft laugh escaping his lips as the boy took off after the woman at top speed, his tail flying wildly behind him. As the boy drew closer to her, he thrust his powerful anatomy into the air, his forelimbs extending as the cinnamon wolf aimed to tackle Ariana forcefully to the ground.

A shiver ran down Ariana’s spine as limbs bunched to launch her forward again, a grin splattered artfully across the canvas of her gently carved features. Memories of the chase at the ghastly area flooded back. This was just like then, except this time Xavier was chasing her. At the time, the adolescent couldn’t have been happier. Then light chuckle that was produced by the boy was pulled into folded ebony ears with surprise, and the russet girl skidded to a halt to glance behind her. He was already back up? She had to admit that she’d grown confident enough in her own agility that she had underestimated his. And now he was nearly upon her.

With frantic haste, the girl spun her front to face forward again, hind limbs pushing off again in desperation not to be caught. Looking backwards certainly had been a mistake. Forepaws found it to be a good time to have a clumsy greeting, and as her balance leaked away, Xavier collided with her. Suddenly she was soaring towards the ground, front legs shooting out before her as if she were trying to fly. A huff was forced from lungs as her chest met the ground, her neck straining back to keep her chin from doing the same. A grunt of protest left lips as the Yahn daughter found herself pinned, her skull plopping down to rest on the earth in surrender. "My mistake ta go easy on you…" she puffed in effort to cover up her other genuine mistakes. Embarrassment scorched her face, the dumb grin still tickling lips. What a great runner she’d be, and what a great example of her abilities she’d just displayed. And to Xavier. Somehow, screwing up in front of him made it worse.

Being stronger than when they had last met, Xavier nearly underestimated his power, tackling Ariana with more force than intended. A huff was expelled WWIIIPPPPPPPPP.
